What is a USI?

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
  • will give you access to your training records and transcripts (available in late 2020)
  • can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
  • is free and easy to create and
  • stays with you for life

What does my USI do?

Your USI links to an online account that contains all your training records that you have completed from 1 January 2020 onwards. These records and a transcript will be available in your USI account in late 2020.

One of the main benefits of having a USI is having easy access to your training records and transcripts. When applying for a job or enrolling in further study, you often need to provide these records. From late 2020, you will be able to access your USI account online anytime from your:

  • computer
  • tablet
  • smart phone

Once you create your USI you will be able to:

  • give your USI to each training organisation you study with
  • view and update your details in your USI account
  • view and download your training records and transcript
  • manage which training organisations can view your transcript
  • manage which training organisations can view and/or update your details in your USI account

Who needs a USI?

If you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training, you need a USI in order to receive your qualification or statement of attainment.

Do I need a USI if I’m only doing part of a course?

Yes, even if you enrol with a training organisation just to complete part of a course, a module or a single unit you will still require a USI.

Are there any exemptions to creating a USI?

Courses delivered over a single day or less before 1 January 2020:
A USI is not required where courses are delivered over a single day or less and a student is unable to provide a USI before completion of the course. If students have a USI, RTOs must collect it and verify it.
Exempt Individuals:
o International students undertaking their entire VET course outside Australia (also known as offshore training).
o Students who have completed their VET training prior to 1 January 2020 but have not yet been issued with a qualification or statement of attainment in respect of that training.
o Students who have applied for and obtained an individual exemption in writing from the Student Identifiers Registrar because they have a genuine personal objection to being assigned a USI.

What happens if I don’t have a USI?

If you don’t have a USI you will not receive your qualification or statement of attainment.

Can my training provider create a USI for me?

Yes, as long as they have your permission, your training provider may create a USI for you.

Will my USI appear on my training certificate?

No, under legislation your USI must not be printed on your qualification or statement of attainment.

Can my USI be used by my training provider as student number or identifier?

No, your USI cannot be used by your training provider as an identifier for you.

Can another person create a USI on behalf of a student?

Yes, a person can create the USI with the student’s permission. They will need to indicate they are creating a USI on behalf of the student when agreeing to the terms and conditions.

Is the USI for high schools or universities as well?

If you are studying a nationally recognised training (VET) course while you are still at school or at university you will need a USI. If you are only undertaking a university course you will not need a USI.
